Music: What Four

CD Baby finally came through and got my copy of What Four's self-titled debut in stock and sent it to me last week. Coming from the suburbs of Chicago, the band is made up of Brian Trahan, Bryan Kveton, Dan Yadron, and Dylan Fischer. Although they are a rock band at heart they have show some signs of jazz, blues, and yes, even classical (hell one of their best songs on the album is called Prelude No. 1 in D Minor). And there is where I think the appeal is. They would make Robert Frost proud, they take the path less travelled and use instruments you rarely see in the genre. Cello, egg shaker, organ, and even a guiro; yeah, they are all used here. And it really gives their music a more unique feel.

Unfortunately, the album only has seven tracks on it, but don't let this discourage you from at least checking it out. Some of my favs are Give It A Chance, Prelude No. 1 In D Minor, and Little Violin. With Give It A Chance probably winning out as the best song on the cd with its fantastic organ sound and great blues guitar playing. On Little Violin you can really hear the jazz influence and its really cool when they bring the song down near the middle of it.

Oh yeah, did I mention these guys are in HIGH SCHOOL!?!? I was totally blown away when I read this when looking to buy their album. I had a few of their songs on WOXY and would never in a million years guess that they were a high school band. I remember our bands in high school, they were nothing like this. They used to think they were really cool covering Limp Bizkit's cover of George Michael's Faith. Yeah, that was cool. I'm glad these guys didn't follow the regular path and play the same generic crap that everybody else seems to be turning out. They actually went out and got a piano player and are starting to make a little niche in the indie scene. Take notes high school bands! These guys are going places and I'm sure this is not the last you will hear of them.

Now the good news is that the album is available at CD Baby (an independent internet record store...which I will be recommending here shortly) where you can hear the first two minutes of each song on the albumn. The bad news is that its not on iTunes...yet, so you can't purchase songs individually. It's like $12 with shipping, which is better than most albums out there.

I hope you like...
